From the Spree to Sachsenhausen: A journey of Contrasts

Travel has a funny way of reminding us that not every plan goes as expected. Over the last few days, I experienced both the beauty and excitement of Berlin as well as the disappointment of a canceled adventure, followed by one of the most sobering and impactful visits of my entire trip. It was a series of experiences that perfectly captured what travel is really about—not just seeing new places, but learning to embrace every twist and turn along the way.
Cruising the River Spree
One of the highlights of my time in Berlin was taking a river cruise along the Spree. Seeing the city from the water offered a completely different perspective than exploring it on foot. As the boat glided through the heart of Berlin, I was able to take in famous landmarks, historic buildings, modern architecture, and hidden corners of the city that many visitors never get to see.
The atmosphere was relaxing, with people from all over the world enjoying the sunshine and incredible views. Passing beneath Berlin's many bridges and watching locals and tourists enjoy the riverbanks reminded me how vibrant and alive this city truly is. There was something peaceful about slowing down for a while and simply observing the city from a different angle.
As someone who spends much of my travels walking, taking trains, and constantly moving from one attraction to the next, the cruise offered a chance to pause and appreciate the moment. Watching the city drift by while hearing stories about Berlin's past and present made me realize just how much history is layered into every neighborhood and every street.
A Detour from Bratislava
Not every travel story goes according to plan. Unfortunately, my much-anticipated trip to Bratislava had to be canceled.
I'll admit I was disappointed. Bratislava had been high on my list, especially because I hoped to continue on to Turá Lúka and Myjava, where my grandmother's family roots trace back. Visiting the villages connected to my family history was something I had been looking forward to for a very long time. The opportunity to walk the same roads, see the same landscapes, and connect with a piece of my family's story felt incredibly meaningful.
For a moment, it was difficult not to focus on what I was missing. Travel plans take time, effort, and excitement to put together, and having one fall through is never easy. But as frustrating as it was, travel also teaches resilience and flexibility. Sometimes the best adventures are the ones you never planned, and sometimes a postponed trip simply gives you another reason to come back.
Bratislava, Turá Lúka, and Myjava aren't off my list. If anything, this experience has made me even more determined to make that journey happen in the future. Some destinations aren't just places on a map—they're personal connections waiting to be explored.
Sachsenhausen: A Visit I'll Never Forget
With my plans changing, I decided to visit Sachsenhausen Memorial and Museum instead. Located just outside Berlin, the former concentration camp serves as a powerful reminder of one of history's darkest chapters.
Walking through the camp was an emotional experience. Standing where thousands of people suffered unimaginable hardships puts history into perspective in a way no book, documentary, or classroom lesson ever could. The preserved grounds, memorials, exhibits, and personal stories create an experience that is difficult to put into words.
What struck me most was the silence. Despite the number of visitors, there was a shared sense of reflection and respect throughout the site. People spoke quietly, took their time reading exhibits, and seemed to understand the importance of the place they were standing in.
As I walked through the grounds, I found myself thinking about how important it is to preserve places like Sachsenhausen. They serve not only as memorials to those who suffered but also as reminders for future generations. History can be uncomfortable, painful, and difficult to confront, but understanding it is essential.
Sachsenhausen was not an easy place to visit, nor should it be. It serves as a reminder of the consequences of hatred, intolerance, and unchecked power. Leaving the memorial, I felt grateful for the opportunity to learn, reflect, and honor those whose lives were forever changed there.
Looking Ahead
These last few days have been a reminder that travel is about more than checking destinations off a list. Sometimes it's about finding beauty in unexpected moments, adapting when plans change, and learning from places that challenge us emotionally.
While I may have missed out on Bratislava this time, I gained experiences I never would have had otherwise. From the peaceful waters of the Spree to the difficult lessons of Sachsenhausen, every stop on this journey added another layer to my understanding of Germany, Europe, and even my own family history.
As my adventure continues, I'm reminded that every destination has a story to tell. Some stories bring excitement, some bring disappointment, and some encourage reflection. Together, they create the memories that make travel so meaningful.
And while Bratislava will have to wait, the road ahead still holds plenty of adventures yet to come. If this trip has taught me anything, it's that sometimes the best stories come from the journeys you never expected to take.
